The Berkeley County Coroner has identified a man killed in traffic in the early-morning hours on Sunday. 60-year-old Keith Jerome Barnett of Goose Creek was walking in the eastbound lanes on N.A.D. Road near the North Charleston Wannamaker County Park when he was hit by a car. Though the Berkely County Sheriff’s Office, the Goose Creek Rural Fire Department and Berkeley County EMS all responded to the scene, Mr. Barnett’s injuries were fatal.
The driver of the vehicle, a 2014 Nissan sedan, was not injured in the accident. The name of the driver has not been reported.
The vast majority of pedestrian fatalities occur after dark, with Friday and Saturday nights accounting for a disproportionate number of deaths. If you must walk at night, protect yourself by:
- Walking on the sidewalk whenever possible
- Staying as far from traffic as possible if you must walk on the shoulder of the road
- Seeking out well-lighted routes
- Wearing light-colored or reflective clothing
- Avoiding headphones, walking while looking at your phone, and other distractions or obstacles to seeing and hearing what’s happening around you
- Refraining from walking under the influence of alcohol
