According to WCSC, a victim of a serious motorcycle accident had an opportunity to meet the first responders who saved his life. The crash took place on Sullivan’s Island in the fall of 2024, but Lt. Abner Martinez didn’t meet the paramedics and others who responded to his accident until just before Christmas.

Martinez says as he lay on the ground coughing up blood, he recognized that his situation was dire. He realized that if someone didn’t show up to help soon, he wouldn’t survive. Fortunately, EMS did arrive in time, and Martinez regained consciousness as paramedics worked on him in the ambulance. Still, with more than 20 internal injuries, Martinez had a long road to recovery.

Martinez personally thanked everyone involved in saving him, including 911 operators, police officers, Sheriff’s deputies, paramedics and firefighters.

This is a heartwarming story because Martinez survived, because his wife and child were by his side while he thanked those who fought to save him, and because first responders got to see firsthand the difference their efforts made. But, it is also a cautionary tale. On a GoFundMe page created by his wife, Julie, she says her husband had “multiple fractures, countless surgeries and very close calls” as he fought for his life for nine days.

Motorcycle Accidents are More Dangerous than Automobile Accidents

Lt. Martinez’s story has a happy ending, but that isn’t always true. The difference between motorcycle accident outcomes and automobile accident outcomes is striking.

  • More than 7% of South Carolina motorycle accidents are fatal, compared with less than 1% of auto accidents.
  • More than 70% of South Carolina motorcycle accidents involve injuries, compared with less than 25% of auto accidents.
  • More than 16% of South Carolina motorcycle accidents involve serious injuries, compared with just over 1.2% of auto accidents.
  • Nearly 75% of South Carolina automobile accidents are “property damage only,” compared with just 22% of motorcycle accidents.

The reasons motorcyclists are at greater risk in a collision are readily apparent. For example:

  • A motorcyclist doesn’t have the benefit of safety devices like seat belts and air bags.
  • A motorcyclist can easily be thrown from the bike, dragged behind it, or pinned under it.
  • The motorcyclist’s body is directly exposed to the other vehicle, the pavement, or any object the motorcycle collides with.

Safety gear, especially appropriate DOT-approved helmets, can make a big difference. But, a motorcyclist is always more vulnerable than a driver or passenger in a car, truck, SUV or other enclosed passenger vehicle.

Serious Help for Serious Injuries

If you’ve suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident, rebuilding can be a long, difficult process. If that accident was someone else’s fault, they should be responsible for your medical bills and other expenses associated with the crash and your treatment and recovery. Unfortunately, insurance companies don’t always cooperate with that process. The more seriously injured you are and the more money is at stake, the more likely they are to try to avoid paying fair compensation.
